Hello,
I am in Solana Beach and about 2 weeks ago (beginning of September) we planted our buffalo grass. The blades are yellowish and the nursery said it may be from over watering so I’ve cut down on the watering. We applied Amaze weed control but I’m still pulling out weeds. There appears to be another type of grass coming in and I’m afraid it’ll take over the buffalo so I’ve been pulling it out. The buffalo grass does not appear to be spreading. I trimmed the blades using scissors at the advice of the nursery to spur growth. Any advice (or just patience?!) Thank you so much, I’m not a gardener and a complete novice at this so any advice you may give is much appreciated.
Hi Christine,
Here is what I am guessing since I haven’t seen pictures of your plantings.
Watering: You need to keep the soil moist for the first 3/4 weeks depending on how hot you are. In Solana Beach that should not be an issue. If you have sandy soil then you might need to irrigate everyday. If you have clay then maybe every two days. The main issue is to allow the roots from the plugs to grow into your soil. If its too dry you start to stress the plugs and then the leaves go yellow.
You don’t have to prune of cut till you see the runners start coming off the plugs and start rooting into the ground. The mowing helps stimulate the growth but only after you see the grass taking off.
I am not familiar with Amaze but it might not be register for the weeds you say are coming up. You can do a couple of things to keep them in check. Pull them by hand/hoe or spot spray Roundup on a calm day. Keep the spray nozzle close to the ground so you to get overdrift onto the plugs.
Thanks,Danny
Hello Christine,
I live in Carlsbad and am considering a UC Verde Buffalo grass lawn. I was wondering how yours worked out. I’d like to see an established lawn in coastal San Diego County before I make the decision.
Thanks
Scott
I’d like to see a UC verde buffalo grass lawn too. I live in Bonita.
Hi Art! Looks like you’re down in San Diego county – I’ll have our socal rep get back to you. He handles the majority of our sales south of Bakersfield, so he would be best able to point you in the right direction! I’ll copy you in on the email!
I would like to put UC Verde on my property in Fallbrook but, price 4 acres of plugs! Yokes. Any ideas?
Hmm that is a lot of area to cover! You could try spacing the plugs further apart – it will take longer to fill in, but it will definitely help the pocketbook! But then again, that is still a huge area to cover, so it would still be pretty expensive. I’m sorry I couldn’t be of more help with the suggestions!
have a hillside in Del cerro which is hard rock and contains hard roks underneath and clay type soil. last landscaper planting various plant needed to use jackhammer for the holes(small and large plants). can buffalo grass grow work for my slope as ground cover. shall i send you picture of my slope as it sits today?
Dean
Hi Dean! Yes, please send us a pic – you can email it to me at ltakao@takaonursery.com. I’ll run all of this past my dad, he’d be best able to access if UC Verde would work for your situation. Thanks! Lisa
Hello, I live in Vista. Is there somewhere up here where I can find buffalo grass.
We are starting a daycare early next year and I was going to try using it as a lawn. Also is it already to late in the season to plant.
Ray
Hi Ray! Let me refer you to our southern California representative, Florasource – http://www.florasourceltd.com – 949-498-1131 – they would be better able to point you to a location down there where you may be able to see the grass in person. It is already too late in the season to plant – we don’t recommend planting past August because the grass begins to go dormant in late October/early November. Thanks! Lisa
Thank you for the info. I will call them.
