You’ll find real stories and pictures from other people that have installed California Buffalograss on this blog! But a couple of our customers provided us with a detailed account of their experiences that we think will be helpful to others out there. Read on for more info!
“An important feature is that it requires less water — 50-75% less than tall fescue, and even much less than bermudagrass. It is also highly resistant to diseases and insect pests…and it requires mowing only every 2-3 weeks for a mowed lawn look, or as little as once a year for a more natural look.”
Lazy Gardener’s Blog in Phoeniz, Arizona
“This is REAL triple digit weather … over 110 for most of the month…But I’m using 60% of the water it would take for an established Bermuda lawn, and mowing less than once a week. Unlike Bermuda, that turns scraggly when underwatered, the Buffalo grass just slows down it’s growth but stays reasonably green.”
Jim Kulkhen of San Diego, California
“My water bill for the months of May and June ’09 indicated a 58% savings.”
Question:
I am concerned that if I plant Buffalo grass in an area without containment borders (cement driveways, edging, etc…) it will over time spread into natural areas I did not want it to protrude into. Is there a natural way to contain it from spreading too far?
Hi Dan, UC Verde Buffalograss does send out runners, but they are above ground and you can easily maintain it by simply cutting the runners back. Since it does spread above ground, it will go over edging if it’s not trimmed. I would not say that it is overly invasive or aggressive though. Just a simple pruning every now and then will do the trick!
Anyone plant this in the fresno & clovis area? I would assume from the map that it would take and thrive here but looking for some insight and personal experiences. We do get frost regularly in the winter
Yes there are several in Fresno. One I have been given permission to share the address of is at 345 E. Simpson, it’s the front lawn. She keeps it maintained short. You will need to put it in a location that receives 7+ hours of daily sunlight or it will have delayed to almost no growth. It is not a good choice for shady areas.
Are there any locations in San Diego you could share?? I am very interested in using but my husband wants to see an example lawn first.
Hi Marie! Please contact our Southern California broker – they should be able to point you to some locations! Florasource Ltd 949-498-1131 or email rosa@florasourceltd.com
